I’ve lived with many different cats throughout my life, and they’ve done some strange and amazing things, but the two we have now are quite a pair, both together and individually.
Meet Hunter, our large grey and black striped male. He’s lovable, curious, full of energy, and romps heavy-footed throughout the house like an elephant. Recently, he’s decided that it’s his job to let us know when the phone rings, as if we’re not aware of the noise it makes. When someone calls, Hunter jumps up onto the old desk next to where I write. He then continues to circle the phone, meowing until I answer it. Once the job is done, he jumps down and goes about his business.
Recently, when I was out of the office, I heard the phone continue to ring and ring and then it stopped. When I came back, I found that Hunter had not only circled the phone, but had decided to answer it for me as well. There on the desk beside him lay the receiver, off the hook. (I keep a corded phone in my office as it works much better near my computer.) When I picked it up, no one was there. I asked Hunter if they’d left a message, but I guess they didn’t speak “feline.”
After several times of him repeatedly answering the phone, but not taking a message, I’ve placed the phone in the top drawer of the old desk to keep it from his “helping paws”. So far he’s left it alone, at least until he figures out how to open the drawer.
